Manchester City are reportedly on the verge of securing a deal for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, with personal terms said to be close to agreement.

The 26-year-old, regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers in world football, is expected to leave PSG this summer after being left out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup. Since joining the French champions from AC Milan on a free transfer in 2021, Donnarumma has made 161 appearances, keeping 56 clean sheets and collecting 10 trophies, including four Ligue 1 titles and last season’s domestic and European double.

Manchester City Make Their Move

According to reports from Florian Plettenberg, Pep Guardiola’s side are progressing well in negotiations with Donnarumma. City view the Italian as a direct replacement for long-serving goalkeeper Ederson, who is close to finalising a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray. Discussions between the two clubs are said to be advancing smoothly, clearing the way for Donnarumma’s arrival at the Etihad.

PSG have already lined up Lille’s Lucas Chevalier as Donnarumma’s replacement, while the goalkeeper himself confirmed his impending exit on Instagram, expressing frustration at how the club handled his situation. His agent also criticised PSG, claiming they showed “zero respect” towards the Italian international.

Competition From United and Chelsea

Both Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with Donnarumma in recent weeks. United are believed to admire the former Milan star, though Andre Onana is expected to remain the first-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford. Instead, the club may focus on signing a younger back-up rather than a high-profile rival for the Cameroonian.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are in the market for an upgrade between the posts following Robert Sanchez’s inconsistent displays last season. The Blues have reportedly made contact with Donnarumma’s representatives but currently trail City in the race for his signature.

The Likely Outcome

As things stand, Manchester City are considered favourites to land Donnarumma, with a deal expected to accelerate once Ederson’s departure is confirmed. Should the transfer go through, Guardiola would secure one of Europe’s most accomplished goalkeepers to anchor his defence for years to come.
