Barcelona defender Iñigo Martínez has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, with multiple reports suggesting a move could happen imminently.
Despite recently signing a contract extension and being a key figure in Hansi Flick’s plans last season alongside Pau Cubarsí, the 34-year-old now appears to be “close” to leaving the club, according to transfer expert Matteo Moretto.
Further backing the reports, Fabrizio Romano stated on social media that Martínez could depart Barcelona “with immediate effect”, with Al-Nassr among the clubs showing strong interest.
“Iñigo Martínez could leave Barcelona with immediate effect. Club and Spanish defender discuss terms for potential exit as there are Saudi Pro League clubs interested. Al-Nassr are keen,” Romano posted.
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has already indicated that the club intends to offload at least one centre-back this summer due to squad depth and ongoing financial constraints. However, speculation had focused more on the potential exits of Ronald Araújo or Andreas Christensen, both of whom have now reaffirmed their commitment to staying at the club.
Though Martínez is currently considered first choice heading into the new season, his age (34) and Barcelona’s need to ease salary pressures—especially in light of La Liga registration issues—may prompt the Catalan club to accept a lucrative offer from Al-Nassr.
Should the move materialize, it would mark another major acquisition for Al-Nassr as they continue to strengthen their squad with high-profile European players.
