Manchester United Reopen Contract Talks with Kobbie Mainoo Amid Chelsea Interest

Manchester United have reopened discussions with talented midfielder Kobbie Mainoo over a new contract in an effort to fend off growing transfer interest from Chelsea, according to fresh reports.

The 19-year-old still has over two years left on his current deal, but previous negotiations over an extension stalled late last year. That delay sparked speculation, with Chelsea reportedly monitoring the situation closely and considering a move should United decide to cash in on their prized academy graduate.

Under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, selling homegrown players offers pure profit on the books, a tempting prospect for clubs in need of raising funds. For United, such a sale could have aided their ongoing squad rebuild under manager Ruben Amorim.

However, the Daily Mail reports that United have now re-engaged with Mainoo’s representatives, hoping to secure his long-term future at Old Trafford. Mainoo, currently sidelined with injury, is expected to request a wage increase to around £180,000-per-week, bringing him in line with other senior squad regulars.

If United fail to agree on a new deal, they could face renewed approaches in the summer from a number of interested clubs. Chelsea are not alone in their admiration for Mainoo, and the midfielder’s rapid rise through United’s ranks has made him one of the most highly-rated young talents in English football.

Earlier this year, United also faced interest in Alejandro Garnacho – another academy product – from Chelsea and Napoli, but no agreement was reached. While Amorim is keen to keep his brightest stars, he has openly admitted that difficult decisions could be necessary given the club’s financial position.

Speaking in January, Amorim stressed the value of homegrown players:

“Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players that we build for this club. But we know the position that this club is in at this moment. We will see, but I really like our players, especially from our academy. I’m really happy with Kobbie, he’s improving and also Garnacho.

The focus is that we have to improve our academy and bring more players through. That is something all clubs in England have to take advantage of – players who play for the shirt, but also those you can sell.”

United’s stance is clear: they want Mainoo to remain a central figure in their midfield for years to come. But with Chelsea lurking and the player seeking a significant pay rise, the outcome of these renewed talks could shape United’s future both on and off the pitch.
