Liverpool are on the verge of completing a sensational move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, according to the player’s agent.
The Reds had an initial offer rejected last week but are reportedly preparing a second, improved bid to secure the services of the Swedish international. Isak has expressed his desire to leave Newcastle this summer, having already reached a personal agreement in principle with Liverpool.
Agent Confirms Advanced Talks
Isak’s agent, Gonzalo Gaitan, confirmed the advanced nature of discussions in an interview with Saudi Arabian outlet Arriyadiyah, stating:
“We are already studying and analysing all options, and we may be close to finalising the next step for the player.”
This follows multiple reports indicating that Isak has formally requested a transfer, with his mind firmly set on a move to Anfield.
Deal Dependent on Newcastle’s Stance
Newcastle United have so far resisted Liverpool’s advances, publicly maintaining that the 25-year-old is not for sale. However, the Magpies may soon face increased pressure, particularly with reports suggesting they are preparing to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško as a potential replacement.
Liverpool’s initial bid was believed to be around €126 million, with an additional €11 million in performance-based bonuses. Newcastle are reportedly holding out for a figure closer to €172 million, which would set a new British transfer record. The current record stands at €136 million, paid by Liverpool earlier this summer for Florian Wirtz.
Striker’s Discontent at Newcastle
Isak’s desire to leave stems from a number of factors. Contract renewal talks have collapsed, reportedly due to Newcastle’s refusal to meet his €350,000 per week wage demands. Additionally, the striker is said to be frustrated by what he perceives as a lack of ambition in the club’s transfer activity.
Isak has been a standout performer since joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 for €73 million, scoring 62 goals in 109 appearances. His consistent goal-scoring form has made him one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers.
Liverpool’s Summer Restructure
To finance the move, Liverpool have been actively offloading players. Luis Díaz has already joined Bayern Munich in a €75 million deal. Darwin Núñez is also on the market, expected to command a fee in excess of €50 million, while Federico Chiesa is close to a €12–15 million exit, likely to a Serie A club. Harvey Elliott is also expected to be sold if the right offer comes in.
With over €300 million already spent this summer, Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak represents a clear intent to reshape their attack and remain competitive both domestically and in Europe.
