Barcelona’s summer planning continues to move forward with a strong emphasis on departures, as the club looks to free up wage space and refine the squad under new head coach Hansi Flick.
According to Sport, five players have been marked for potential exits in the coming weeks, and while some cases are proving complicated, one name now has a clear destination in sight: Oriol Romeu.
Romeu Not in Flick’s Plans
The 33-year-old midfielder, who spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Girona, is not expected to play a role in Flick’s project moving forward. Romeu has one year left on his contract with Barcelona, but the club does not anticipate receiving a transfer fee for him. Instead, both sides are exploring a mutual contract termination.
Before any decision is finalized, Romeu is awaiting a direct conversation with Hansi Flick. The German manager is expected to clearly communicate his plans, which should help determine the next steps. A key factor in the outcome will be whether Romeu is willing to forgo part of his remaining salary to facilitate an exit.
Girona Lining Up a Return
Girona appear ready to welcome Romeu back for another season. The Catalan club values his experience and familiarity with the team, and is reportedly waiting on Barcelona and Romeu to reach an agreement before preseason begins. Girona are not prepared to pay a transfer fee, so the outcome hinges on Romeu’s release from his current deal.
Romeu previously played at Girona in the 2022/23 season, and rejoined Barcelona in 2023 for a reported €3.4 million fee. His potential return to Montilivi would mark a return to a system and squad where he has already proven to be a valuable asset.
Barcelona are aiming to finalize Romeu’s situation before the club departs for their preseason tour in Japan and South Korea.
